As an Arden resident for more than 30 years, I’ve served on a number of committees, including Community Planning, Assessors, BWVC, the original Harvey Road Traffic Calming Committee, Centennial Committee, the Governance Task Force, and most recently, as co-chair of Registration. I was chair of the Avery Task Force, which led the effort to purchase the five acres adjoining Sherwood Forest to keep it as natural woodlands and prevent it from being developed into a dense housing development. I have also served on the Arden Club Board, and am currently on the Board of the Arden Building and Loan and a steward of the Schroeder Trust. My Arden experiences have instilled in me the desire to see Arden continue as the unique and special place it is for all residents.
I believe that it’s important to safeguard our voting procedures to ensure that everyone has a fair and considered voice in the decisions that mold our community. For voting decisions to reflect the true desire of the village, it’s important to have as many eligible voters participate as possible. Communicating with residents about the issues and helping people understand the importance of their vote will encourage broader participation.
The recently purchased electronic voting system will help ensure that votes are accurately and efficiently counted and that all votes are anonymous. For Arden to survive as a direct democracy, it’s important to protect the voting practices that our democracy depends on.
