Jeffrey Steen, candidate for Schroeder Trust Steward

BIO; 34-year resident of Arden, 10 years growing up along Naamans Creek and 24 years living on Walnut Lane. EDUCATION: BS (political science), UD, 1969; MS (entomology and ecology), UD, 1975. As a note, I was the UD mascot, the Blue Hen, during the 1966 football season. EMPLOYMENT: 3.5 years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa (Congo and Botswana) and 36 years administering the Clean Water Act’s waters and wetlands program (31 years in Philadelphia and 5 years in Anchorage, Alaska). I am educated and experienced in matters related to natural systems analysis; ecological concepts; and applied methods, including wetland creation and restoration, and aquatic resource creation and restoration. I have been involved in preparing litigation reports and in testifying in Federal District Court with regard to violations of the Clean Water Act. I am a founder and member of the Society of Wetland Scientists, an organization of professional wetland scientists. I have one son who lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, with his family.

INTEREST AND/OR SKILLS:
My Arden interests include protecting and adding to Arden’s woodlands; maintaining Arden’s English garden style; supporting cultural and community activities; maintaining the Founders’ design; and supporting traffic calming measures on Harvey Road that do not erode Arden’s standing on the National Register of Historic Places, e.g., no sidewalks. The Civic Committee has partial responsibility for spending a considerable amount of money under ARPA. A recently completed report, the “Arden Water Quality Management Report”, proposes nearly 24 projects in Arden. It is important that the Civic Committee have the skills, knowledge, and experience to appropriately evaluate the report’s recommendations. These are areas with which I am familiar. The Forest Committee has responsibility for protecting and improving Arden’s woodlands. These are areas with which I am similarly familiar. In addition to my water and wetlands work, I have experience in contract development and contract management, including preparation of Scopes of Work. As an example, I had oversight responsibilities for Hurricane Katrina clean-up in Louisiana and Mississippi for several months. I believe that my presence on both committees would assist in protecting Arden’s open spaces and woodland resources. Your votes for Civic Committee and for Forest Committee would be appreciated.
