“I grew up in North Jersey in the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains.
I have no formal education in any science beyond High School. Everything I know about botany, ornithology, geology, and all other aspects of natural history, I learned on my own through reading and observation. When I was a child I had a neighbor who was a scholar of natural history. He would take me fishing and hiking and tell me all about what was in the woods and fields. He triggered my interest in the natural world that has lasted my entire life
That is all. It is why I know the Difference between a Blackburnian Warbler and a House Finch, or a Red Pine and Tamarack.”
