Carol Larson, candidate for Forest Committee

WHO I AM:  I’ve lived in Arden since 2007 and served on the Forest Committee since 2009.

INTERESTS AND/OR SKILLS:

I’m interested in practices that will make our footprint on the earth lighter. To support our goals of invasive plant management, I am certified by the Delaware Department of Agriculture as a pesticide applicator .  I serve on the Urban & Community Forestry Council of the Delaware Forest Service. I study Forestry, Arboriculture, forest restoration practices, and invasive plant management. I’m interested in how surface water travels through our streets, what happens to it as it flows toward the woods, and how to improve water quality in the streams that run through the woods. I was coordinator for the Sherwood Restoration project where we planned and implemented innovative hybrid dam structures to control water from a neighboring development that damaged our woods.  To support this work, I helped procure grants from DNREC to plan and implement water management projects as well as multiple tree planting projects for almost $250,000.
My interest and passion is maintaining and diversifying the magnificent tree canopy that makes Arden special. I have worked with many arborists while tending to trees in Arden.  I enjoy taking classes and webinars on tree care and Forestry from many resources including The Penn State Extension, the Morris Arboretum, Mt. Cuba Center and the Delaware Nature Society.  I have attended conferences on Tree Management and tree care given by the Penn-Del Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture. I also attend conferences to educate myself about Best Management Practices for improve water quality including the Annual Delaware Wetlands conference and the annual Watershed Congress sponsored by the Delaware Riverkeeper Network.
