Slide Insurance: Travelers Risk Control

OBSERVATIONS AND DISCUSSION

We surveyed the slide the Village is in the process of building.  Because it’s a somewhat unique structure there has been some concern about hazards the slide may present (including my previous review of photos of the project).  Based on our review on Thursday, following are thoughts about the structure:

  • I was initially concerned about whether the slide and the surrounding area (e.g. paths, rocks, etc.) would comply with Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. It’s apparent that you’ve considered CPSC compliance in your plans and construction, focusing on ADA compliance, inclusion of fall zone materials throughout the area, attention to the slope of the slide, the use zone, etc.;

  • I also had a concern with the sides of the slide chute; after my visit, I’m comfortable the sides of the chute are sufficient to keep the participant from exiting the chute as they descend; you’ve also included a smooth surface area on both sides of the slide to provide participants with some protection from injury from the larger surrounding rocks;

  • The design anticipates that some participants will climb the rock structure to reach the top of the hill. While it’s apparent that the placement of the rocks includes “steps”, I would encourage you to continue to be cognizant of the potential trip and fall exposure and ensure rock placement reduces this exposure as much as possible.  This includes the rocks placed around the top of the structure.

While there remains a significant amount of work to complete the project, my visit and our discussions provided me with a better comfort level for the project.  You should also consider including signage providing rules, guidance, etc. for participants.

We appreciate your business and the opportunity to help you reduce exposures and minimize loss.  If you have questions regarding our discussions or if I can be of further assistance, please contact me.  Thank you for choosing Travelers.

Sincerely,
